Winter is well on its way
despite the recent mild weather in Hangzhou. As most of you know the popular
American holiday of Thanksgiving is on Thursday 28th of November this
year. Interestingly, this is the latest possible date for Thanksgiving, just a
few days before the Christmas countdown.
Ok, so we’re sure most of you
know the traditions involved with Thanksgiving and the historical context so we
won’t pay lip-service to the story here but instead we will offer you some
advice about giving lessons about the festival. We will also tell you about
venues in Hangzhou which usually celebrate Thanksgiving, giving you the chance
to find the elusive Chinese turkey and hangout with other expats!
Even though Thanksgiving is an American festival many schools would like ESL lessons and activities about the day, whether you’re an American teacher or not! Part of your duty as an Echo teacher is instructing students about global events and traditions… and it’s hard to argue Thanksgiving isn’t one of them. Therefore our non-American teachers are welcome to find teaching resources about the festival on our Baidu resource share-folder. We are also attaching some PDF worksheets to this article. This means all you Brits can not only educate your students but yourselves!!
So where can you find a turkey dinner with all the trimmings?
Well actually, we’re not going to lie, turkey is difficult to find in Hangzhou and it can be very expensive. If you are hell-bent on cooking your own then ordering off Taobao is possible. If you’re roasting don’t forget to make sure your bird is thoroughly and correctly cooked! For those of you looking to connect with others: usually Eudora Station Bar
101-7 Nanshan Rd Shangcheng District, holds an event. Wades bars on Wulin Road and Wensan Road will also partake in festivities. For those of you looking to splash out we know the Hyatt Hotel, Marriott and Landison Hotel will offer Thanksgiving dinners. In the past it’s been possible to have a full Thanksgiving dinner delivered by Eudora or the Hyatt Hotel but as of yet this year the same service hasn’t been confirmed.
